12 Kid-Friendly Songs that Won't Make You Go Crazy (Plus One Not-So-Kid-Friendly Option)
Our kids start listening to music at a young age (I have been known to stress out about choosing which song would be the first song they would hear after birth). At home, there's always music on in the background (usually indie, but often classic rock, hip hop, pop, and jazz and blues at dinner), and when they are young, it's easy to control what they listen to. But time and time again, the music that has served us best--whether we are driving or trying to enjoy some fun time at home with the kids--has been music with big, poppy hooks and lots of sing-along options. Of course, there are those songs that we've listened to a million times: Jack absolutely loved "Ho Hey" by the Lumineers (to the point we dressed up as the Lumineers as a family for Halloween), while Rose has asked for "My Birthday Song" ("Birthday" by the Beatles) nearly every day since her last birthday.
Now that Jack's in first grade, he's making his own music suggestions, which span from the excellent to the tolerable to the, um, just bad. The twins, Rose and Clara, have started singing along to songs on the radio. Clara, in particular, loves LCD Soundsystem, especially their recent song "Call the Police"--she practically screams the "We all, we all, we all, we all know this is nothing" at the beginning. And baby Sadie is always dancing, no matter the tune!
Below are 12 songs that the kids all love--and that don't make us crazy (even after hearing "Ho Hey" for what feels like the millionth time). There's lots of clapping ("Ho Hey", "HandClap"), sing-alongs ("Some Nights", "All These Things That I've Done"), implorations to move ("Move", "Go Outside", "Take A Walk"), and fantasy ("Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots"). "Before The World Was Big" by Girlpool is a cute reflection of childhood particularly resonates with the parent in us. And of course, "Downtown" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, which is totally not kid-friendly but has helped us get through more than one road trip--I think our record for consecutive plays is close to 10, which got us through the last 45 minutes of a holiday drive to Arizona.
Enjoy! And let me know your favorites--I'm always on the lookout for new songs!
