Return of the Top 5 - Tune-Yards Edition
Years ago, on my previous music blog (go ahead, see if you can find it!), I published a weekly "Top 5" consisting of five songs I was really into that week. New songs, old songs--it didn't matter.
This week, I'm bringing back the Top 5 in honor of the Tune-Yards (or tUnE-yArDs, if you've been there from the beginning). In the early days, the Tune-Yards were the solo music project of Merril Garbus, but the band now includes bassist and songwriter Nate Brenner as a full-time member. The band is coming through San Diego next week (playing at the Observatory) and I am hoping to finally check them out live.
In fact, it was a live appearance that first turned me on to the Tune-Yards. I remember seeing them years ago, making their debut TV appearance with the Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Now, seven years later, it is still one of my favorite late-night TV performances:
