My Favorite Mother's Day Gifts to Give and to Get
Before I became a mother, Mother's Day was a special day exclusively reserved for my Mom, and it's one of those things I didn't really realize would apply to me until my first one came around and I found myself blushing at the idea that I would also be treated on Mother's Day. Fast forward seven years later, and I relish the day, both as a mother and daughter, as a special day to reflect on being a mother, indulge in myself a bit, and appreciate my family. While we don't always make a big deal about minor holidays, Mother's Day and Father's Day are significant ones in our house.
While the day is significant, the gift doesn't have to be very large in order for it to be meaningful. Here are a few Mother's Day gift ideas from my wish list and a few past favorites.
Take the Planning Out of the Day
I am a planner. I like to have an idea of what we're doing going into each day (and often week). I like to organize myself and our family around those plans. That said, the idea of having one day totally planned for me sounds luxurious. One wonderful past Mother's Day, Zach planned and prepared a beach picnic and we drove up to Malibu for an amazing beach day. Everything was done, so I could simply enjoy time with my family.
Beautiful Personalized Gifts
Photo gifts are always appreciated. I have especially loved beautifully framed photos or annual calendars that I get to enjoy all year long. Last year, Zach made a gorgeous brass desk calendar from Artifact Uprising, which I still love. Their brass framed photos and the brass geo rail and set of prints are also lovely. (They'd make great gifts for the grandmothers in your lives too.) Pinhole Press is another one of my favorite sources for photo gifts. Their All About Mom photo book is adorable and would be so much fun to put together for grandparents. I have ordered their photo cards for a few holidays in the past and they never disappoint. This floral Mother's Day photo card is especially cute.
Update: Artifact Uprising is offering a Mother's Day special now through May 1. You get 10% off if you spend $10, 15% off if you spend $100, and 20% off $200+. Use code FORMOM.
Indulge the Mother
On Mother's day, I like to spend the day with my family, however, that doesn't mean I don't still love some quality time on my own. Depending on your budget and wishes, indulgence can take several forms. A simple, favorite gift to give is a manicure and pedicure at a local nail salon. Unless your mom has a preferred salon, I like to look for one that is a notch above their typical manicure to make it a little bit special.
For a little more indulgence, you can treat mom to a spa treatment (or two!). My sister and I have made a day out of it and taken my mom to the spa to spend some quality time together, while indulging. Spafinder has a gift card that works at thousands of spas. In California, I always enjoyed Burke Williams spa. In New York, Great Jones Spa was wonderful. (Which spas do you like?)
Now, if you want to knock it out of the park, this is a wish list idea I've been saving... Give the mom of the day a card full of cash, send her out shopping and then ask her to meet you somewhere for dinner in a new outfit. It almost feels a bit illicit to meet your partner at a restaurant, instead of arriving together, and the dinner date forces you to spend the money then rather than hem and haw about what to buy. Total luxury.
I wish all of the mothers and mothers-to-be out there a wonderful Mother's Day this year.
