This Summer We Are Writing Secret Pen Pals
Who doesn't love getting something in the mail? Jack is subscribed to National Geographic Kids, and it's a very good day when his magazine arrives. My love of stationery has taken me to Mr. Boddington's Studio many, many times to lust after the beautiful paper goods (it's art, really). The website is chock full of fun and joy. They have many lovely things for kids too — a letter to Santa kit, letters from camp writing kit, lunch notes and so much more.
On my recent sightseeing tour of Mr. Boddington's Studio, I came across The Secret Society of Letter Writers. It sounded like some kind of fantastical Wes Anderson creation. I had to find out more.
It turns out, it's a real-life pen pal club for all children who love to write. It promises to be a "global community of young people who love mail" and will "honor and protect the hand-written letter." Now this is a cause I can get behind!
I immediately signed Jack up. It took about a month or so for our first correspondence to arrive, but it was worth it. The package included an adorable card with program information, a folded card with a form to fill out and confirm participation, a pledge with Jack's name on it, and a card encouraging kids to write three letters in exchange for a "prize and your next set of SSLW instructions."
The program is free, although, of course, they encourage you to purchase letter writing kits (and I gladly obliged). I cannot wait to see who Jack's pen pal is. This is such a great way to keep up his penmanship and writing over his summer break, and we get to have fun as part of a "secret society" too. Brilliant!
